'How aged networks, poor standards worsen electricity supply'


According to him, the ongoing power sector reforms to standardise power equipment to boost power supply will end the incessant power outages and restore regular supply of electricity to consumers.
“Our responsibility as contained in the act that establishes NEMSA, is to certify power equipment and engineers handling power projects, because substandard equipment and incompetence in the handling of electrical projects has always been the major challenge in the power sector, especially in Nigeria where nobody wants to do the right thing,” he stated.
Ewesor said some of the electrical equipment in use were installed 20 years ago and warned that excess load on the 33 kilovolts (kV) line will lead to the total collapse of the system. ....

Inside ministers' many battles with heads of agencies


With such clashes usually come allegations of insubordination,  financial impropriety, abuse of office, award of contracts without following due process, non-remittance of appropriate funds to government’s coffers and other infractions.
While these ministers adduced various infractions as reasons for their ‘fights’ with heads of agencies under them, analysts, however, believe there are always more “behind the scene” reasons and vested interests for such actions.
Such altercations, according to some analysts, also affect operations of the concerned agencies, even as they erode political authority in governance across the board, with public interest suffering the most.
Two former ministers who spoke with Daily Trust on Sunday on the issue yesterday described such open confrontations as signs of indiscipline and the inability of the government to maintain a cohesive administration. ....

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP may have recently touched the tiger’s tail with its advisory to the ruling All Progressives Congress APC to throw in the towel and agree that it has failed Nigerians.
But the APC would have none of it as it noted that the PDP has lately been engrossed in concocted tales and ramblings on the polity, advising that Nigerians be spared the trauma of a reminder of the disaster of the PDP’s years of misadventure in government.
“The party should allow Nigerians forgive it for the numerous transgressions and agony it had put Nigerians through many years of misrule”, APC said in a statement. ....
