BIDAR: A pontiff of Basava Dharma Peetha has landed in trouble for allgedly holding a blackbuck in captivity illegally amid demands from wildlife activists to initiate stern action against the mutt.
In photographs taken by locals, Basavaprabhu seer is seen feeding the antelope and chaining it in the mutt at Basavakalyan in Bidar. Blackbucks are protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and violation of the same can attract fine and imprisonment up to three years.
Local wildlife activists claimed the mutt also has the skin of an antelope and the seer sits on it spread on the chair. The antelope in the photograph was captured when it was young. It remains chained when unattended and is even brought inside prayer halls during rituals, they alleged. ....
