Durban - The number of suspected âghost employeesâ in the Msunduzi Municipality is now down to just 13.
Exco members were informed during a meeting on Thursday that more employees had presented themselves for verification over the past few days, and there were now just 13 employees who still needed to be verified.
This is down from 121 two weeks ago.
The municipality is doing a headcount of all its staff members to determine if all staff are present and accounted for.
Two weeks ago, the administrator, Scelo Duma, said he had given a directive to freeze the salaries of 121 individuals because they had failed to present themselves for the headcount despite being given several opportunities to do so. ....

Durban â Senior Msunduzi Municipality managers are facing calls they be disciplined by council following accusations they were not doing their jobs.
For months, senior managers from different business units have allegedly failed to submit important reports to the internal audit unit and the audit committee.
The reports are essential to understanding the performance of the municipality.
In a report to council, municipal manager Madoda Khathide said the senior managers were employed by council and council should discipline them.
Concerns were also raised some business units may not be fully addressing the administrative or compliance issues raised by the internal audit. ....

DURBAN - WIDESPREAD theft of water and electricity by community members is driving up the consumer debt crisis the Msunduzi Municipality is facing and threatening the survival of the municipality.
The municipalityâs consumer debt is standing at R4.6 billion.
Water and electricity are the biggest trade services of the municipality. Water theft accounts for close to half of the debt at R2 billion.
The municipality is forecasting it will suffer more than R200 million in water losses this financial year largely because of theft and leaks. ....
