'Like rolling a turd in glitter': Irrigation consent sparks rally on water issues

MHV had sought a 10-year replacement consent from ECan for permission to irrigate 56,500 hectares of farmland between the Ashburton and Rangitata rivers.
The case was considered by an independent hearing commissioner but was not required to be publicly notified, which distressed local freshwater advocates who felt they were not able to have a say.
Rally organiser Sara Campbell said ECan had failed in its duty of care, because it treated the health of Canterbury’s water as something to be balanced against economic gain.

Protesters demand accountability over 'diabolical' state of Canterbury rivers

About 200 gathered at lunchtime to tell council what they thought about its record and asked for more of a say on the granting of irrigation consents.
Among the protester s concerns was the granting of another 10-year consent for the Mayfield Hinds Valletta irrigation scheme in mid-Canterbury.
They said it was a free pass for dairy farmers to continue producing polluting nitrates, mostly from the urine their cows produced.
Forest and Bird Canterbury West Coast regional manager Nicky Snoyink said the 50,000 hectares it covered was ground zero for polluting nitrates, and it had some of the highest levels in the country. ....

New industry research into importing gas from Australia criticised

“Importing natural gas from Australia in the form of [liquefied natural gas] would be crazy when we have our own local resources here.
“More than likely it would mean higher energy prices for consumers and higher emissions from shipping [it] here.”
Carnegie said it means New Zealand would be funding the Australian economic recovery, instead of generating jobs and royalties for itself.
“If we’re going to keep using natural gas until at least 2050 as the Climate Change Commission acknowledges, surely it’s better to produce it locally.”
But a spokesman for GIC said the implication they are about to start facilitating the import of natural gas is not correct. ....
