The larger, more sophisticated cap, was designed to give us greater control over the oil flow as we complete the relief wells that are necessary to stop the leak. now, our scientists and outside experts have met through the night, and, continue this morning to analyze the data from the well integrity test. they are working to determine whether we can safely shut in the well, using the new cap, without creating new problems. including possibly causing new oil leaks in the sea floor. now, even if a shut-in is not possible, this new cap and the additional equipment being placed in the gulf, will be able to contain up to 80,000 barrels a day. which should allow us to capture nearly all the oil until the bell is killed. well is killed. it is important to remember, ....

About 24 hours into a 48-hour window with bp testing the pressure on the cap and hoping it can contain the oil until the relief wells are complete. president obama said even if this isn t the ultimate fix, it is very good news. even if a shut-in is not possible, this new cap and the additional equipment being placed in the gulf will be able to contain up to 80,000 barrels a day. which should law us to capture nearly all of the oil until the well is killed. we re live in venice, louisiana. that was at about 10:00 eastern time this morning. so now five hours later, how are those tests going? reporter: well, chris, we re expecting a briefing from bp sometime this afternoon, and presumably, they ll have an update for us at that time, because their plan is to evaluate this test every six hours. it s a 48-hour test, which they plan to check in on every six ....

Development. david? wolf, admiral thad allen releasing a statement to us a short time ago saying that we are encouraged by this development, but he cautions that this isn t over. he says they have to continue to watch the data coming in and watch how the capp performs, bu hi talk about the cap being a temporary measure for hurricanes. he says that the temporary information they are gathering will help them to gain a better understanding of options for a temporary shut-in of the well during a hurricane. and he says very plainly here, it remains likely that we will return to the containment process using this new stacking cap connected to the risers to attempt to collect up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day until the relief well iscompleted. so it looks like the plan is to go back to releasing the oil and let it get pumped up to the surface. this new stack allowing them to be much more efficient than they ....

Barelies, we produced 8,381 barrels yesterday. a lot of densely compacted ships and rovs out there. we will continue to watch with great anticipation and we realize there are chances to increase our chances of containing the hydrocarbons moving forward. i will be glad to take your questions. maybe you can take us through some of the backup planning. if the well were to rupture while you have the shut-in, what happens then? i mean, is there some sort of emergency response plan in place or vessels on hand? what happens at that point? if we have very low pressure readings as i said, we will do this in increments. if we have sustained low pressure readings, we know we can t sustain that in the long run and while there may be hydrocarbons working into the formation, there s an acceptable ....

Is there equipment problems in the shallower part of the well? is the tie-back string sealed? those are all questions that would have to be answered about whether it was a viable well. i suspect that they re going to kill it from the bottom with the relief well. that s definitely the most viable option. get a bunch of seamen in there, then probably cut that wellhead off and begin doing some or bring them up to the service and start doing some analysis. they say if all goes well, by the way, that that could be in place the kill operations by the end of july. does that sound on target to you? sure. you know, if they have a weather problem or something like that, that could be definitely delay them. but it is perfectly reasonable. if they get the well shut in, there s not going to be any hydrocarbons getting into the ocean. ....
