1 Officials Confirm 14 Dead After Cable Car Crashes In Italy
Italian officials say 14 people are dead after a cable car accident in northern Italy yesterday morning. The lone survivor? A five-year-old girl, who at last check remains in critical condition. The Stresa-Mottarone cable car, which takes people from the town on Lake Maggiore to the top of the Mottarone mountain, somehow fell off its cable to the ground and rolled several times down the mountain slope before hitting some trees. Authorities have not released any names of the victims, but it has been confirmed that five Israeli nationals are among the dead – as is the surviving child. As for what happened, witnesses say a hissing sound was heard before the cable car fell about 65-feet. The transportation ministry reports that safety and maintenance records show that the whole lift structure underwent a renovation in August 2016, with a maintenance check last being performed in 2017.
