Mexico. by your estimation and other scientists , this is about peak time for migration season for a lot of these sharks that are finding their way into the gulf, going to more shallow waters in order to give birth, in order to feed. is that still your concern, that this could not have come at a more inopportune time for the sharks in particular? yes. at least here in the north central gulf, a lot of the pupping, when the sharks give birth, occurring during may and early june. a lot of females remain offshore and are in the offshore waters in the affected areas. they re probably being exposed as we speak at some level, whatever that is. especially with that oil being dispersed. so now those pups are coming into these near shore environments. because these animals give live birth a lot of that contaminant is going to be basically transferred right to the pup. that s a concern. and then as they start the new ....

Environmental trade-off. you will be protecting one environment, which is the sensitive marshland and near shore environments at the expense of another environment, in this case the organisms that are underneath in the water column. and what is it about surface dispersant versus subsea dispersant? obviously they work differently and can harm different things. yes. the subsurface application has never been done before. there are differences between those two applications. with the oil coming to the surface, you have your oil slick on the surface. up to 40% of that oil will move into the air above that water, so you do lose some oil. but if you are dispersing oil down at the subsurface, then those compounds that would be lost to the air, if that oil rose to the surface, are not lost there, they re entrained into that water column. ....

Dioxide. what s the environmental concern? what part should we be worried about? well, in the open ocean the concerns are a lot less than when you get in and start interacting with near shore environments. near shore environments of course are where the marine life, the animal life live, as well as people. so as long as we re offshore, it s not a lot of sea birds that you have to worry about diving into the oil slick. marine mammals, it s not they re all marine mammals in the gulf of mexico, dolphin, whales and so on but not a big population. so i don t think marine mammal issue is a big issue for this particular spill. let s talk talk to me a little bit, dr. overton, about how you contain this. we heard that bp, which is leasing this rig, sent out seven vessels initially to try and contain this spill. what does one do to contain the spill? several options. one is you can try to wash it away with a soapy material called a disperser. ....
