Online Ordering is Key Ingredient in Good Cakes and Bakes' Resilience During Pandemic

Good Cakes and Bakes on the Avenue of Fashion is a must-visit bakery for Detroiters. After the bakery’s establishment in 2013, the business owned by April Anderson and Michelle Anderson quickly become a Detroit staple.  The bakery’s delectable offerings have led to a handful of high-profile appearances, awards and recognition, including April Anderson once baking for Oprah Winfrey, and being the pastry chef for the 2018 James Beard Media Awards.  Within seven hours, Good Cakes and Bakes received more than 800 orders.  “We lost a lot of money trying to figure that out,” says April Anderson. But they did and learned how to ship entire cakes across the country.

Yardi Gras Stories: House floats bring neighbors together in Central City

Sharon Lurye, Uptown Messenger Thom Karamus, left, and his neighbor Daniel Whamond carry the head of the Caterpillar for Karamus’ house float. Mardi Gras parades may be cancelled, but that hasn’t stopped residents of Central City from turning their neighborhood into a festive Wonderland. Central City is one of the many neighborhoods participating in Yardi Gras, an alternative to Mardi Gras parades where homeowners decorate their own houses as floats. On the 3200 block of Dryades, for example, residents are working together to turn four homes into “Alice in Wonderland”-themed house floats.  Friends and neighbors came together on Saturday to start putting up whimsical decorations. One house was the Cheshire Cat, and the others were the Queen of Hearts, the Caterpillar and the Mad Hatter. The neighbors shared pizza and art supplies as they decorated, and music kept everyone bouncing.
