WORCESTER Workers at the EcoTarium voted to unionize this week after a year of discussing the potential decision. The science and nature museum announced Thursday that 22 employees at the museum have voted to join the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 93 with a 94% yes vote. After a three-week-long mail-in election and several months of group meetings and organizing, election results were tabulated on July 7. Rachel Quimby, EcoTarium public programs coordinator, said the museum s staff chose to unionize after a year of unsustainable work. The staff here are some of the most talented, devoted, caring people I ve ever worked with, but we weren t being supported, Quimby said. Decisions were being made without our input, decisions we did not agree with, and there was a lot of secretive stuff happening behind closed doors that we were totally cut out of. ....

WORCESTER After a three-year tenure as president and CEO of the EcoTarium museum of science and nature that was dominated in its later stages by the COVID-19 pandemic, Lucy Hale is stepping down from her role effective May 28 as her current contract comes to an end. Hale, who joined EcoTarium in 2018 after a long career in science museums and zoos in Texas, oversaw the completion of Wild Cat Station and grew attendance prior to its extended period of closure beginning in March 2020. She also oversaw the outdoors reopening of the EcoTarium after seven months in April. In an announcement May 14, the EcoTarium Board of Trustees praised Hale’s strong leadership in improving EcoTarium’s operations, securing the organization’s financial stability, as well as navigating the many challenges of the pandemic which included a near 80% loss of earned revenue. ....
