Both open into the extreme north of Pakistan: into Chitral and Gilgit. The one to the east is a bit longer and larger in area whereas the other in the west is shorter but more fertile. Both the valleys are home to the indigenous Dardic people of the Indo Aryan race. The western one is now a bit more modern culturally as well as in terms of its infrastructure. Here modernization is faster, and change is accelerated while the other valley is still very closed socially and culturally – and very poor in its infrastructure, too. Here cultural change is awfully slow except language shift which has been so rigorous since the 80s while owing to cultural traits and traditional norms the valley still seems to be in the 90s. ....
Trouble in paradise MINGORA: The scenic Swat valley, which is considered the ‘Switzerland of Pakistan’ is gradually losing its natural beauty due to environmental degradation caused by deforestation, air pollution, water contamination, soil erosion, population explosion, urbanisation, industrialisation, use of plastic bags, noise pollution and climate change. Swat has been at the epicentre of many man-made tragedies and natural calamities. Be it extremism or disasters, there is no calamity that has not already descended upon Swat valley. The 2010 floods that wreaked havoc in Swat valley was a warning for taking measures to protect the delicate ecological balance of the region. Deforestation and unplanned urbanisation has already stressed the ecology of the region. ....
Parents in Upper Dir village seek girls’ school upgrading National March 8, 2021 PESHAWAR: The elders from the far-flung and neglected area in Barikot Union Council in Upper Dir district have complained that despite clear-cut directives by the chief minister to upgrade the Government Girls Middle School, hundreds of girl students would not be able to get admission to the ninth and 10 grades this year. Talking to The News, the elders, including Malik Abdur Rashid, Malik Shahi Sultan, Malik Mohammad Amin and Malik Mohammad Nageen recalled that Girls Middle School was established in Barikot in 2004, which was the only first middle school within 48 kilometres. The people in this hilly areas continued educating girls even after the 2010 flood devastation. ....
