STATE OF MICHIGAN –‘We Are Hiring’ is a sign you see at almost every intersection and every business window.
That’s no exception for sheriffs’ offices and jails around the state. For them, it’s been an ongoing issue for the past several years.
“We have had the issue here as well, just like everybody in the state,” says Sheriff Trent Taylor of Wexford County. “We are currently six corrections officers short in the jail.”
With a shortage in staff there is an increase in overtime for those currently working. Longer hours during the week can result in exhaustion – mentally and physically. Even Lake County Sheriff Rich Martin has been working Saturdays to make up the difference.
