A study from the University of Manitoba is hoping to give 800 families activity kits as part of a study. 
Wellness activities are also included for both caregivers and their families, as we want to ensure families take care of themselves during these difficult times,  founding member and project director of the ToyBox project Sheri-Lynn Skwarchuk says. Skwarchuk is a professor and development studies director at the University of Winnipeg.
The ToyBox project is being created with the University of Winnipeg and the help of parents, educators, and university and high school students to improve children s numeracy, literacy, and wellness. The Toybox testers will be given three activities a week, focussing on literacy on Mondays, wellness on Wednesdays, and numeracy on Fridays. The six-week study ends in March. ....

Project offers new strategies for parents teaching their children at home

A new Manitoba initiative can give parents new ideas on how to teach their children while they’re at home.
Toy Box is an at-home learning initiative from the University of Winnipeg offering parents and caregivers new ideas on how to teach literacy, numeracy and wellness activities in the home.
The strategies are for children aged two to eight. They are evidence-based and were compiled by a group parents, educators and students from around the province.
“These ideas are meant to plant seeds for quality opportunities you can do with your family,” said Sheri-Lynn Skwarchuk, an education professor and director of developmental studies at the University of Winnipeg. ....

The four-year-old was so hyper-aware of hygiene the result of practising COVID-19 safety protocols at daycare and nursery school throughout autumn she asked her parents to serve her meals using tongs. Olive insisted on staying home so she wouldn’t have to wear a face mask or go near other people. She counted aloud the seconds her parents washed their hands. ....
