Ladies and gentlemen, the speaker of the United States house of representatives, the honorable paul ryan. [applause] good afternoon everybody, its great to see you here. We are here today to honor the 65th infantry regiment of the u. S. Army. [applause] [cheers] speaker ryan or, as we prefer to say, the borinqueneers. Isnt that cool . [applause] puerto rico became a part of the United States in 1898. And soon after, congress created a special unit of puerto rican soldiers. They went on to fight for our country valiantly, in both world wars and in korea. But throughout their service, they suffered persistent discrimination. For too long, their contribution to our history has been overlooked. Sitting, today we are the record straight. By giving them the highest award within our possession, the congressional gold medal. But now it is time to pause and take a moment to reflect on the magnitude of what happened here 150 years ago. To set the stage for this commemoration ceremony, i would like to welcome superintendent jim northrup to say a few words. [applause] well, good evening. As amy said, my name is jim northup. It is my great privilege to serve as the superintendent. Im here to join with amy and our hosts to welcome you and thank you for coming to this very important element in the 150th anniversary events here at cedar creek. Amidst all the activity that is taking place around us, we are gathered at this place in this moment to remember exactly what happened here.
