The Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield Festival of Lights and associated activities this year were a success, according to Kristi Hornung. 737 people passed through the Santa House, a big increase from previous years, but letters to Santa were down a bit from last year. Hornung says, in 2020, they mailed out about 225 return letters, compared to 125 this year. The Festival of Lights itself is technically finished, but Hornung says some displays will stay up for a few more days. The unemployment rate in Illinois dropped from October to November, going from five to 4.5 percent, according to recent statistics from the Illinois Department of Employment Security. The state's November 2020 rate was 7.6 percent. Wayne County's rate fell from 3.7 percent in October to 3.6 percent in November, and Edwards County's dropped from 3.7 to 3.5 percent. Fairfield Mayor Mike Dreith says Fairfield Police Officer Kody Moore tendered his resignation from the department yesterday. The city accepted and will not require two-weeks notice in an effort to allow him to assume a new position as quickly as possible. The mayor says the police department is evolving, and he and Chief Richie Fulkerson will work up a plan as to whether they will look to add a replacement officer or redeploy existing officers in the future. 44-year-old Fairfield resident Lance M. Wayne County Senior Citizen Center Advisory Committee member David Savage says the committee’s recommendation to build on to Bob Boyles Hall at Frontier Community College is based, in part, on a desire to serve multiple age groups, not just the county’s seniors. Though the project is still a considerable way from construction, he says the potential project would expand the hall to about twice its size, with the option of partitioning the new addition from the existing building.
A petition has been started for the Wayne County Highway Department to place a four-way stop at the intersection of Enterprise Road and the Route 161 Extension north of Fairfield. The move is a response to Friday’s fatal accident, along with several other serious or fatal crashes at that location over the years.
