Mark the date: Santa Train gift distribution set for November 20

KINGSPORT — The 79th annual Santa Train event will take place Saturday, Nov. 20, Santa Train sponsors announced Wednesday. Due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19, and considering the amount of advance time it takes to make plans, organizers said they will once again hold drive-thru distributions at four Food City locations rather than host a traditional, multi-stop running of the train. “Planning the Santa Train takes several months, so the decision to hold our drive-thru gift event was made out of an abundance of caution in light of ongoing concerns about COVID-19,” said Bryan Tucker, vice president of corporate communications at CSX. “We look forward to continuing the tradition of giving back to the area and are pleased to spread holiday cheer and lift spirits this November.”

KSP: Pike man fled from police before hitting cruiser, then fleeing on foot

Jimmy Norman A Pikeville man was arrested on several charges recently after allegedly leading Kentucky State Police on a vehicle chase before hitting a trooper’s cruiser, then fleeing on foot. According to an arrest citation written by Trooper Braxton Whitmore, at approximately 10 p.m. on May 13, he was on patrol in the Millard community when he observed a 2001 Toyota Tacoma with expired registration. Whitmore wrote that the driver, later identified as Jimmy Norman, 44, of Road Fork, Pikeville, was not wearing a seat belt, and the trooper attempted to make a traffic stop. Norman, the citation said, continued to flee on U.S. 460, driving toward U.S. 23 at speeds reaching 90 mph. Norman, the citation said, eventually entered the parking lot of the Shelbiana Food City, circled the parking lot without regard to the people in the parking lot and exited the parking lot.

KSP: Traffic stop on ATV leads to evidence of meth trafficking

Joseph D. Hopkins A Pike man was arrested on several charges including trafficking in methamphetamine after Kentucky State Police said a trooper conducted a traffic stop on his ATV. According to an arrest citation by KSP Trooper Christopher Tyree, on April 6, he observed an ATV operated by Joseph Dewayne Hopkins, 37, of Greasy Creek Road, Shelbiana, cross multiple lanes of traffic. Tyree wrote that upon making contact with Hopkins, he found that Hopkins was visibly impaired, with “glazed-over eyes and visible white residue around (his) nostrils.” Hopkins, the citation said, was initially compliant and voluntarily stepped off the ATV, but became non-compliant during a safety pat-down Tyree was conducting. Tyree wrote that Hopkins got back onto the ATV and refused commands for several minutes until he again got off the ATV and was placed into handcuffs.
