A retired engineer has hatched a plan to convert a dangerous wartime relic threatened with demolition into a series of beach huts.
Grandfather Bernie Watson wants to save the covered way which runs along the coast road between Barton s Point Coastal Park in Sheerness and the White House restaurant in Minster on the Isle of Sheppey.

He said: One solution could be to use it for beach huts. It is in a lovely, sheltered position with what could be a nicely landscaped lake for boats in front with car parking behind. It would be a sun trap.
Car destroys Holy Trinity church wall in Sheerness

A car ploughed into the grounds of Holy Trinity Church in Sheerness, demolishing part of the wall and railings.
It careered off the road shortly after midnight on Wednesday at the junction of Sheerness Broadway and Trinity Road. A man in his 30s was taken to hospital.

Police cordoned off the pavement with tape after the crash in the early hours of Thursday.
A section of the metal barrier protecting pedestrians, and which carried a Swale council Welcome Back To Your High Street banner, was also destroyed by the impact of the collision.
