A photo spoke to a New York professor for years. It was taken in Topeka.

Young Valerie Sudduth smiles broadly in a snapshot taken in 1964 in Topeka as she posed with her sister, her mother and her mother s new husband.
Victoria Johnson felt particularly taken by that photo when she found it 15 years ago tucked away in a book she bought at a used bookstore in New York City, where she lives.
Johnson, a college professor and historian who is white, didn t know the identity of the family, who was Black.
Still, she liked the photo so much she put it on a shelf in her apartment, Johnson told The Topeka Capital-Journal on Monday.
That family spoke to me out of that photo, except that I couldn t hear what they were saying, she said. It always kind of broke my heart that I couldn t find out who they were and get the photo back to them. ....

Every few years, a New York City woman took a moment to admire the family photo tucked away on her shelf but it wasn t a photo of her own family.
Victoria Johnson came across the decades-old photo 15 years ago in a book she bought at a used book store.
I found this picture in whatever book it was and I was just so mesmerized by it, Johnson told CNN. I just wanted to know who this family was.
The lost photo depicted a Black family from the 1960s a husband, his wife and their two daughters. As a historian and professor at Hunter College at CUNY, Johnson said she was drawn to it. ....
