After Georgia, Voting Fight Moves to Texas

AUSTIN, Texas The battle over election security and voting rights has shifted to Texas, following recent legislation in Georgia that led to a backlash from civil-rights groups and some major corporations.
The Texas legislature is advancing a bill that would limit early voting hours, place more restrictions on people who provide assistance voting, control the number of voting machines at each location and allow partisan poll watchers to record video or photos of people voting, among other measures. The Texas State House is expected to begin hearings on the bill soon, which passed the state Senate around 2 a.m. on April 1 in an 18-13 party-line vote. ....

Lina Hidalgo may have just turned 30, but her achievements expand far beyond her years.
The Harris County Judge has been named a Leader on Time Magazine s Time100 Next list. The ranking “highlights 100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future, according to the publication, and selects recipients based on how they cope with crisis.
In an essay penned by former Democratic presidential candidate and congressman Beto O Rourke, Hidalgo is praised for her persistence, tenacity and intelligence.
At the age of 27, Hidalgo was elected to be the chief executive of a county that has more people in it than in the state of Nevada, O Rourke writes. She is doing an incredible job as judge, as evidenced by her efforts to quickly respond to COVID-19. ....

Only one out of 36 congressional districts in Texas voted for a different party for president and the House, as Joe Biden outperforming recent Democratic presidential nominees failed to translate to down-ballot wins.
According to data compiled by Bloomberg Government, House Republicans received more votes than Donald Trump in well-educated suburban districts that were strongly Republican a decade ago but have become more competitive for Democrats. That helped them maintain a 23 to 13 advantage in the House delegation, winning one more seat than Trump was able to carry. ....
