Beijing Citizen journalist Zhang Zhan, a 37-year-old former lawyer, has given up hope of avoiding her four-year prison sentence for reporting on the coronavirus outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan early last year. A year after Zhang arrived in Wuhan, risking both arrest and her own health to tell people what was happening in the city believed by many to be ground zero of the pandemic, her lawyer told CBS News the case is closed, and she s not looking at any further legal options. ....

Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan has been sentenced to four years in prison for reporting on the emerging COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan.

The 37-year-old began posting updates and videos about the coronavirus pandemic back in February. By May, she was arrested and accused by the Chinese government of spreading false information and provoking trouble .
“I don’t understand. All she did was say a few true words, and for that she got four years,” said Shao Wenxia, Zhang’s mother, who attended the trial with her husband. ....

Zhang Zhan, a 37-year-old Christian journalist in China, has been sentenced to four years in prison in Shanghai due to her reporting of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, the epicenter of the viral spread that sparked the ongoing pandemic.
The citizen-reporter was found guilty Monday by the Shanghai Pudong New Area People’s Court of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” according to a report from Reuters. ....
