影片集中展现了1921年各方力量汇集的上海，在民族危亡的“至暗时刻”，当时平均年龄只有28岁的一群理想主义者为信仰集结，探索救亡振兴的真理道路。
虽身处黑暗，但心向光明。为了呈现上海滩的魅力，剧组把外滩扫描完，用三维技术细致还原了当年的气象。彼时上海还没有霓虹灯，剧组就在所有建筑上安装了上万个小灯泡。用摄影指导曹郁的话说，“把横店拍摄基地整个装饰起来”。
