ISIS launches attack against Peshmerga forces in the vicinity of Kirkuk ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – ISIS launched a violent assault on the Peshmerga forces in the border area of the town of Pirde (Alton Kopre), northwest of Kirkuk. Armed clashes took place between ISIS militants and Peshmerga forces in the sprawling area, killing three Peshmerga fighters. ISIS launched its attack on two sites of the Tenth Brigade of the Peshmerga forces, which resulted in the martyrdom of a company commander and three Peshmerga fighters, according to a military source. The Ministry of Peshmerga said in a statement that its forces resisted and repelled strongly the attack launched by ISIS terrorists in the Dibs hills northwest of Kirkuk, indicating that the Peshmerga forces inflicted heavy losses on ISIS as the terrorists fled, leaving behind the bodies of their dead. ....
On Feb. 22, the USD International Club celebrated International Mother Language Day to recognize the many cultures of international students and bring visibility to a host of languages. The club hosted an event in the Muenster University Center pit lounge from 12 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students had the opportunity to meet with international students, discuss mother languages and take place in a language trivia quiz for prizes. Alice Lunardelli, president of the International Club, said the day is a great way for international students to both feel represented and have an outlet in which they can speak their language. “I speak Italian, and it’s not a language that’s represented in the modern languages department… so it’s a way for people to be like, ‘oh my gosh, somebody speaks Italian,’ ‘oh, I can speak Italian on that day and someone will be interested in it,’” Lunardelli said. “It’s kind of like a bridge for those who want to learn more but they can� ....
USD’s graduate school is sponsoring the fourth annual Three Minute Thesis competition this month. The preliminary rounds were held Thursday, Feb. 11 and the final rounds will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The winner of the competition will be awarded $350 and will go on to the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools 3MT competition. The second and third place winners will be awarded $250 and $150, respectively. There are six contestants moving on to the final round: Kirby Fuglsby, Christa Huber, Brandon Meyerink, Carrie Minette, Elizabeth Sterling and Nisitha Wijewantha. The Three Minute Thesis competition is judged by criteria set out by the Three Minute Thesis rules. The competition criteria dictate judges of the competition must be non-specialists.
