In her role as outreach educator and exhibit preparator for the University of Northern Iowa Museum, Jess Cruz helps create public exhibits for the UNI Museum and works with students to prepare them for a career in museum studies.
And as a proud Hispanic and bisexual woman, Cruz also serves as a resource and advocate for students across campus. That s why she joined UNI s Out and Ally Network, a collective of faculty and staff, organized by UNI’s Gender and Sexuality Services office, who are LGBTQ or allies of the community.

Before he became an accomplished photographer and performance artist, University of Northern Iowa professor Jeffery Byrd struggled with how to safely express his identity in a time and place where being out was dangerous.
His formative experiences growing up in Alabama have shaped a 30-year career in which Byrd, who was one of the founders of UNI’s first gay and lesbian studies course, has been a resource and advocate for UNI students figuring out their own identity. That’s why he was one of the first to join the campus’ Out and Ally Network, a group of faculty and staff who are LGBTQ or allies of the community.
Simpson College President Marsha Kelliher has announced Keyah Levy will join the administration as Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Levy most recently served as Director of Multicultural Education and Gender and Sexuality Services at the University of Northern Iowa, and brings more than 15 years of experience into the role. Levy will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of programs designed to ensure the fair and equitable treatment and success of students, faculty and staff, and will also provide strategic direction for training initiatives on cultural competency and building a climate of equity and inclusion on campus. Levy will begin the position on June 1st.
