Vientiane (VNA) - The Embassy of Vietnam in Laos’ Vientiane confirmed that a Vietnamese
person with COVID-19 had died after a week of treatment.
The patient, who is a
52-year-old woman, is the first Vietnamese
COVID-19 patient in Laos and also the
first
COVID-19 patient in the country to die of the disease, according to the
embassy.
The patient moved to Laos
early last year and worked at a karaoke bar in Vientiane, one of the locations ....

First Vietnamese COVID-19 patient dies in Laos
The Embassy of Vietnam in Laos’ Vientiane confirmed that a Vietnamese person with COVID-19 had died after a week of treatment.
The patient, who is a 52-year-old woman, is the first Vietnamese COVID-19 patient in Laos and also the first COVID-19 patient in the country to die of the disease, according to the embassy.
The patient moved to Laos early last year and worked at a karaoke bar in Vientiane, one of the locations connected to patient 59, who was believed to have caused this outbreak of COVID-19 in Laos.
The patient tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 virus on April 28 and had other medical conditions. On April 30, the patient was admitted for treatment at Setthathirath Hospital in Vientiane. ....

Laos: Temporary hospitals planned amid surge in Covid-19 cases

VIENTIANE, April 26 (Vientiane Times/ANN): The Laos National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control is preparing temporary hospitals amid a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Speaking at a media briefing on April 25, Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control, Ministry of Health, Dr Rattanaxay Phetsavanh, said authorities had inspected places proposed for use as temporary hospitals, which will be used if existing hospitals become full to capacity.
“The committee, the Ministry of Health and other relevant bodies have been studying and preparing to set up makeshift hospitals in various parts of Vientiane to ensure that everyone infected with Covid-19 has access to healthcare,” he said as quoted in a media release. ....

Hajime Sunagawa, an advisor for the Okinawa-Laos Cleft Lip and Palate Support Center, which helps provide treatment to cleft lip and palate patients in Laos, recently received the 22nd Nishi-Nippon International Foundation Asia Contribution Award. The Foundation honors organizations and individuals in the Kyushu, Okinawa, and Yamaguchi regions that contribute to international exchange in Asia.
Sunagawa began his work in 2001 out of the Setthathirath Hospital in Laos, and by 2019 he had provided free surgery and treatment to 347 cleft lip and cleft palate patients. In receiving the award, Sunagawa thanked everyone involved and said, “We were able to continue the project thanks to the cooperation of the Japan Cleft Palate Association and the University of the Ryukyus Hospital staff.” ....
