Commission proposes Norman charter amendments

A commission’s review of the Norman City Charter explores the recent councilor recall process and demonstrates the crisis it would have created had the effort to unseat five been successful.
The Charter Review Commission (CRC) was scheduled to meet Monday to discuss changes to the recall petition process, but canceled its meeting due to a lack of quorum. The commission rescheduled for the following May 17.
The agenda contained several possible solutions to concerns that the 2020 recall petition drive created. Unite Norman attempted to recall then-Ward 1 Kate Bierman, Ward 3 Alison Petrone, Ward 5 Sereta Wilson, Ward 7 Stephen Holman and Mayor Breea Clark, five voting members of the eight-member dais. ....

Schueler tapped by Ward 2 committee

A committee to find an interim Ward 2 City Councilor nominated Lauren Schueler unanimously, beating out four other contenders in what was a “difficult decision,” the deciders said.
If approved by the council during the Tuesday, May 11 meeting, Scheuler will be sworn into the Ward 2 seat.
The office has been empty twice in the last year following the death of David Perry and then the resignation of Matt McGarry, who won the Feb. 2021 election.
Committee members Richard Stawicki, Aleisha Karjala and Britton Perry — son of David Perry — found Schueler’s ready answers, broad experience and determination to seek the Feb. 2022 term all favorable reasons for their choice. ....

The Norman City Council will see Unite Norman-backed Kelly Lynn as Ward 3’s next councilor following a Tuesday runoff election between Lynn and incumbent Alison Petrone.
In a close race for Ward 3, the two could not call the win until the last votes were counted.
Voters handed the win to Lynn by 194 votes, preliminary results from the Oklahoma Board of Election revealed Tuesday night. Results showed 4,056 voters cast their ballots with 2,125 for Lynn at 52.39% of the vote, and 1,931 for Petrone at 47.61%. Petrone received 572 absentee votes and 90 early votes, while 241 voted absentee and 138 early voted for Lynn. ....
