police released footage showing the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old black man jalen walker. and later this hour, an update on wnba star brittney griner reaching out with a personal plea to president biden. we begin this morning with yet another community reeling and searching for answers after a mass shooting. hundreds of people gathered along a street in highland park, illinois, a half hour north of chicago. a gunman perched on a nearby roof opened fire seemingly at random. authorities say when the shooting stopped six people were dead. more than three dozen were injured. highland park mayor spoke with nbc s today show about how the community is coping. my greater focus this morning as the sun is rising is how my community is feeling. the unbelievable sadness and shock. this tragedy never should have arrived in our doorsteps and as a small town, everybody knows somebody who was affected by this directly. investigators say the gunman fled after dropping the weapon and
without controversy. change depends on persistence. change requires determination. it took a full decade before the moral guidance of brown versus board of education was translated into the enforcement measures of the civil rights about and the voting rights act. but those ten long years did not lead dr. king to give up. he kept on pushing. he kept on speaking. he kept on marching until change finally came. and when the civil rights and voting rights act was passed, americans still found themselves trammed in pockets of povr across the country. dr. king d didn t say this was a failure, this is too hard, let s settle for what we got and let s go home. instead, he said let s take those victories and broaden our mission to achieve not just civil and political equality but also economic justice. let s fight for a living wage and beer schools and jobs for all who are willing to work. in other words, when met with hardship, when confronting disappointment, dr. king refused to accep
ground zero where it was heavily damaged. the white spots turned gray. it had rips and tears. all this year jeff and his group, new york says thank you, have been going around the country repairing it spot by spot with flags that have flown over other disaster sites and things like that. this portion of the flag flew over pearl harbor when it was bombed. this section right here, this flew at martin luther king jr. s funeral. that was the georgia patch. you can see on the far side there there s active duty military people. they are sewing a part of the flag that flew over the pentagon on september 11th. and, you know, the spirit here, nobody here is talking about terrorists or war or anything. everybody here is talking about the day after september 11th when we saw so much unity and so much bravery by first responders. and that s really the spirit i think that what they want to do is reclaim that from history and be able to have that be as much a part of the story as terrorist
