Several people want to attend the sentencing hearing but due to COVID-19 restrictions on courts they are currently not able to attend. Defence lawyer Mike Nolan told the court he is seeking a four to six-and-half year sentence for his client. Crown prosecutor Scott Bartlett said he is seeking a 10-year prison sentence. Mirasty was charged in March 2020 with second-degree murder. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in October 2020. According to North Battleford RCMP, on March 8, 2020, they got a call to conduct a welfare check on a 22-year-old woman at a residence on the 1900 block of St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford. They found Mooswa deceased.
Mirasty had pled guilty to manslaughter last October in connection to the death of 22-year-old Sequin Mooswa in North Battleford. North Battleford RCMP reported that on March 8, 2020, they received a call to conduct a welfare check at a residence on the 1900 block of St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford. There they found Mooswa deceased. Mirasty was originally charged with second degree murder, but ultimately entered a guilty plea to the manslaughter charge. There have been a number of court dates since then and multiple adjournments. For Mirasty’s latest court date, the Crown and defence appeared before Judge Dan O’Hanlon in North Battleford provincial court; Mirasty himself was not present.
The Crown did not oppose the adjournment. Judge Dan O’Hanlon indicated that he was inclined to adjourn the sentencing anyway given that four people had wished to appear for the sentencing hearing, but were unable to attend. The matters for Mirasty have been adjourned to Jan. 18 at 11 a.m., in Courtroom 1 North Battleford to be spoken to. A new sentencing date will likely be set at that time. The latest court appearance in North Battleford took place via phone conference call, and due to the latest COVID-19 restrictions the courtroom was closed to the public. Mirasty’s own attendance was waived for this particular court date.
