New York legalized cannabis for adults over the age of 21 in March, setting off a gold rush for companies looking to take advantage of the potentially $7 billion market in the US s financial capital. Right now, there are only ten cannabis licenses in the state s medical market, and the companies that own each license will look to quickly transition from New York s relatively limited medical market to the recreational market.

Legal Weed In New York Is Rooted In Economic Justice

Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law early Wednesday, paving the way for cannabis storefronts to start opening as early as next year. This law is the new gold standard for reform efforts nationwide. New York State Just Legalized Weed, and they Legalized it RIGHT

After years of advocacy on many levels, New York State has FINALLY legalized the use of adult-use (recreational) marijuana.  New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the historic cannabis legislation earlier today, making New York the 15th state to legalize adult-use cannabis.  The state is now positioned to become one of the largest markets for legal cannabis in the U.S.  Additionally, New York is now one of the few states where legalization is directly tied to economic and racial equity. The new law will enact a program that will reinvest millions of dollars of tax revenues from cannabis in minority communities that have suffered for decades because of the racial criminalization of cannabis and the war on drugs.

The House Health and Human Services Committee voted on Monday to approve House Bill 12, one of four marijuana legalization bills filed in the state this year. In addition to setting up a system of taxed and regulated marijuana sales, the bill would lift some restrictions on the state s medical marijuana program and some limits on the number of plants producers can grow. The bill now goes before a tax policy committee before heading for a House floor vote.
