While it might look like the male bufflehead, at right, has a harem, this diving duck species is monogamous. Like wood ducks and hooded mergansers, the females are cavity nesters that may return to the same nest site year after year. Its small size — it is among the smallest of North America’s ducks — allows it to fit where other cavity nesting waterfowl cannot go. The southernmost continent of Antarctica is cold, inhospitable, and not the sort of place that most Northwoods residents think about when looking for adventure.  But for one Northwoods native, the chance to live and work in Antarctica was a dream come true.
Carl Robert Eklund was born to Swedish immigrants in Tomahawk in January 1909.  He grew up in the Northwoods and during his high school years was a standout football player for Tomahawk High School.  Like many young people from the area, Eklund loved the outdoors, was an ardent camper, and was active in scouting.  He was a member of Troop 1 at Tomahawk from 1922 to 1925, after which he served as an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 21. He was active every summer as athletic director at Camp Sam-O-Set near Harrison. ....

While many of our summer birds have flown south to warmer places this time of year, Michigan is, in fact, a balmy winter destination for birds who usually spend their summers much father north.
So when winter wraps its chilly arms around our state, it ushers in its own special season for birdwatching, starring birds like the enchanting snowy owl and boisterous winter finches who arrive from the boreal forests in search of food and fairer weather.
Depending on the bird, don’t necessarily expect to see these beauties at your backyard feeder. Rarities might require a special trip to the kind of places they prefer but in that way, birding can become a sort of treasure hunt, and a wonderful reason to plan a winter escape. ....
