United States Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) has introduced legislation to reinstate the right of adults between the ages of 18 and 20 to purchase a handgun from a federally licensed dealer. The Second Amendment Mandates Equality (SAME) Act of 2021, would repeal a law that currently prevents adults under 21 from buying a handgun, according to a press release from Lummis’ office. “The Second Amendment is a constitutional right, and does not treat 18-year-olds as second-class adults,” Senator Lummis said. “In keeping with the Supreme Court’s Heller decision, the SAME Act would overturn our current restrictive anti-handgun statute and ensure equal treatment under law for adults under 21. Ultimately, if we trust 18-year-olds enough to defend our country and to choose our elected officials, we should trust them enough to purchase a handgun.” ....

Rick Scott and other Republicans who voted against the certification of various states’ electors in the 2020 presidential election teamed up on a new bill that purportedly will “save democracy” from “confusion and chaos” that he claimed was seen in the 2020 vote. According to a news release from Scott’s office, the Save Democracy Actwould “improve our election system and restore confidence in our nation’s democracy” with national standards and guidelines to “safeguard the accuracy and integrity of our election system and prevent fraud.” Two of the bill’s co-sponsors, Sens. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Cynthia Lummis, objected along with Scott to the certification of Pennsylvania’s slate of electors on Jan. 6, even after the Capitol riots perpetrated by people trying to stop that process.
