After four years of the far-right government of Jair Messias Bolsonaro, Brazilians peacefully welcomed for the third time the inauguration of the popular center-left leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on New Year’s Day.
Marina Silva, an active environmentalist, has been appointed Brazil s next environment minister by president elect Lula da Silva. Ms Silva held a similar post in Lula s first government in 2003, but following strong differences stepped down and formed her own political party.
President Lula, who will be inaugurated on January 1, celebrated his reunion with the official whose first stint at the ministry (2003-2008) was marked by bold policies fighting deforestation.
