A potential Red Line-Blue Line connector is back in the spotlight

Every now and then, it seems, one of the long-debated MBTA expansion projects resurfaces and captures the publicâs attention for a brief period before quickly receding into the annals of ideas gone by.
That has been the lifecycle of the Red-Blue connector â the on-again, off-again idea to extend the Blue Line a short distance down Cambridge Street to the Charles/MGH Red Line Station, finally linking the only two subway lines that donât currently connect.

As it neared 5 a.m. Wednesday, a small group of senators, representatives, and staff stuck to their posts at the State House, swiftly shepherding through weighty bills with virtually no debate and hours after the formal session’s epilogue was supposed to be written.
About six hours later, many of them were back, participating inside, outside, and with colleagues over Zoom in undoubtedly the most unusual swearing-in ceremony any had experienced.
Such was the end, and the beginning, of formal legislative business Wednesday on Beacon Hill an uncommon fog of action, even by the State House’s opaque standards.

Rep. RoseLee Vincent and Senator Joseph Boncore joined with their colleagues in the Massachusetts Legislature this week in passing breakthrough climate legislation that overhauls the state’s climate laws, drives down greenhouse gas emissions, creates clean energy jobs, and protects environmental justice communities.
The bill, An Act Creating a Next-Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy (S.2995), sets a 2050 net-zero greenhouse gas emissions limit, as well as statewide limits every five years; increases the requirements for offshore wind energy procurement bringing the statewide total to 5,600 megawatts; requires emission reduction goals for MassSave, the state’s energy efficiency program; and, for the first time, establishes the criteria in statute that define environmental justice populations.
