Because of the pandemic, Utahns can now participate in Legislative committee meetings virtually.
The pandemic and worries over violent protest have dramatically changed the setup of Utah lawmakers’ annual 45-day General Session. Lawmakers are being tested regularly for COVID-19; plexiglass dividers have been installed between desks on the House floor and masks are required throughout the Capitol.
Because of security concerns, the building is currently closed to the public, but journalists with media credentials are allowed. While this will likely change, many people may still choose not to come to the Capitol because of COVID-19. Here’s how you can participate from afar. ....

State Sen. Derek Kitchen says he's "terrified" of the potential for violence in the Utah state Capitol because of the ease with which people can bring guns, concealed or otherwise, into the seat of state government.

The Utah Capitol has long been a gun-friendly place. There are no metal detectors at the entrances and both the open and concealed carry of firearms is allowed, the latter with a permit.
Those rules were put in place long before right-wing activists stormed the U.S. Capitol last week in an effort to keep President Donald Trump in office after he lost the 2020 election. Now, with the political temperature ratcheted up, some Utah lawmakers are worried about what could happen when they get back to work next week.
“I’m f -ing terrified!” says Sen. Derek Kitchen, D-Salt Lake City. “There are crazies out there, and they’re whipped up into a frenzy. It scares me, man.” ....
