The former chief of the U.S. Capitol Police is set to tell Congress that he asked the sergeants-at-arms of the Senate and House on Jan. 4 to request the presence of the National Guard at a joint session of Congress two days later for protection.
But both sergeants-at-arms effectively denied that request by then-Chief Steven Sund, which came two days before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot by a mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump, according to a copy of testimony that Sund is scheduled to give Tuesday. ....

McConnell Vows to Hold ‘Painstaking Investigation and Thorough Review’ After US Capitol Breach
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday announced that there would be a review of security protocols after a group of protestors stormed into the U.S. Capitol disrupting Congress’s joint session on Wednesday.
“Yesterday represented a massive failure of institutions, protocols, and planning that are supposed to protect the first branch of our federal government,” McConnell said in a statement. “A painstaking investigation and thorough review must now take place and significant changes must follow.”
He added that initial bipartisan discussions have commenced in congressional committees of oversight and congressional leadership. ....

Top Capitol Security Officials Resign After Insurrection Under Pressure From Lawmakers

A day after an insurrection that overtook the U.S. Capitol, the Capitol s three top security officials resigned from their posts amid building pressure from lawmakers and others over failures that allowed the dramatic breach.
The House and Senate s top protocol officers and the U.S. Capitol Police chief are now all expected to be replaced following a series of resignations in the wake of the security failures.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he accepted the resignation of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Stenger late Thursday. Earlier Thursday, incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would fire Stenger if he didn t quit first. ....
