the frustrations older Californians have faced in trying to secure their shots of COVID-19 vaccine. Today, we’ll talk about what that reality has looked like for seniors in Los Angeles County.
Take 86-year-old Selda Hollander. She hadn’t been able to navigate the vaccine appointment system, either online or over the phone. But she’d heard about an unofficial standby line at the Balboa Sports Complex in Encino and decided to give it a try.

“I can’t figure out if it’s worth it,” she said, shivering slightly as she hugged her knees against the cold. “I’m waiting for the vaccine, but I can get sick because of the weather.” ....

L.A. COVID vaccine rollout puts seniors at a disadvantage


On a chilly January afternoon, 86-year-old Selda Hollander sat on the grass next to a baseball field in Encino.
Though eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, Hollander hadn’t been able to navigate the appointment system online or over the phone. She had heard about the unofficial standby line at the Balboa Sports Complex and decided to try her luck.
“I can’t figure out if it’s worth it,” she said, shivering slightly as she hugged her knees against the cold. “I’m waiting for the vaccine, but I can get sick because of the weather.”
Hollander is one of countless seniors who are struggling to navigate the region’s rocky rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine. Those over 65 have discovered that being eligible for the vaccine is one thing; actually receiving it is another. ....

But some clinics have soon-to-expire doses left over at the end of the day or during an early-afternoon lull, and word has quickly spread about this potential back door to vaccine access. Some who flock to the sites spend hours waiting in the hope of catching a lucky break.
Kedren Community Health Center in South Los Angeles and the Balboa Sports Complex in Encino have been at the center of the rumor mill in recent days, drawing large crowds that begin assembling before dawn. Some people arrive from neighborhoods far from the vaccination sites. ....
