Hāpai Te Hauora applauds the government and today’s announcement by Associate Minister of Health, Dr. Ayesha Verrall on their proposals for a Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan. The three key goals are to eliminate inequities in smoking rates and smoking related illness; increase the number of children and young people who remain Smokefree; and, increase the number of people who successfully quit smoking.
Hāpai Te Hauora are pleased that within the first focus area to strengthen the tobacco control system, it is proposed to prioritise action to strengthen Māori governance of the tobacco control programme. ....

Smokefree group says cigarette purchase age would not dent smoking rates

With just under four years to reach its target to eliminate smoking, a government discussion document suggests drastic action with a proposal to create a smokefree generation by progressively increasing the age at which cigarettes can be legally purchased.
That would mean if the legislation came into effect next year, those who were 18 (born in 2004) would not be able to buy cigarettes for successive years.
That means eventually . you d have a group of people who wouldn t legally be able to purchase until the age of 25 or something, Associate Minister of Health Ayesha Verrall said.
This came as a surprise to Green Party co-leader James Shaw, who said it looked pretty out there and would need to be interrogated very deeply. ....

Māori health providers have been consistently calling for kaimahi to be trained to give the jab so they can get greater coverage, and the Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield has now confirmed an exemption will be made for them to receive training.
It s the news Te Rōpū Whakakaupapa Urutā member and GP Rawiri Jansen has been waiting for.
These are kaimahi, kaiārahi, kaimanaaki, that workforce is going to be eligible to be trained and to do vaccinations.
