PNP chief defends rescue of Lumad children from University of San Carlos retreat house in Cebu

CEBU CITY – The Philippine National Police (PNP) insisted that there were no irregularities in the police operation that led to the arrest of seven persons and the supposed rescue of 19 Lumad children from a retreat house of a university here.

 PNP chief Police Gen. Debold Sinas said standard protocols were followed during the Feb. 15 police operation at the retreat house of University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus.
 Sinas said the PNP is ready to face charges questioning the legality of the police operation.
 “Social workers were present during the operation and it was supervised by the Women and Children’s Protection Desk. I don’t know what was violated. They should file a complaint and we will face it,” said Sinas. ....

MANILA – Police filed kidnapping and serious illegal detention charges against seven individuals arrested in a raid at the University of San Carlos-Talamban campus in Cebu City on Feb. 15, according to Save our Schools Network (SOS)-Cebu.
Three adult Lumad students, two teachers, and two datus (tribe leaders) were subjected to inquest proceedings online at Police Regional Office- Region 7 at around 11 this morning, Feb 17.
The seven are Grade 10 students Moodie Mansimuy-at and Esmelito Oribawan, Grade 12 student Jomar Benag, volunteer teachers Chad Booc and Roshelle Porcadilla, datus Benito Bay-ao and Segundo Milong. ....

CHARGES of kidnapping, serious illegal detention and qualified trafficking in persons were filed online Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021, against two Bakwit School teachers, three adult Lumad students and two Lumad elders.
The charges were filed by the Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) before the Davao del Norte Provincial Prosecutors’ Office in Tagum City during virtual inquest proceedings held via Zoom videoconferencing app at the Police Regional Office Central Visayas (PRO 7) Wednesday. ....
