Netanyahu extends term of Shin Bet chief

The Prime Minister s Office (PMO) on Friday said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has extended the term of Nadav Argaman the current director of the Shin Bet internal security service by four more months.
This statement comes following a report by Ynet s sister outlet Yedioth Ahronoth saying that Defense Minister Benny Gantz was opposed to Netanyahu s wish to appoint his confidant, National Security Advisor Meir Ben-Shabbat, in Argaman s stead. Gantz knows very well that there is no option to appoint a new Shin Bet director during a transition government, and this could only be done by the new government that will be formed, the PMO statement read. Therefore, the prime minister agreed a few days ago with the current Shin Bet director to extend his term by a few more months.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that he was using his personal connections with Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure a prisoner swap deal with Syria that would see an Israeli woman released from Syrian detention in return for two Druze prisoners from the Israeli side of the Golan Heights. I am using my personal connections with President Putin to solve the problem. We are in the middle of sensitive contacts, Netanyahu told Army Radio. We are acting discreetly and responsibly to handle the matter, and I believe we will solve it.

The coronavirus cabinet was meeting late Monday morning to decide whether all Israelis returning from abroad should be required to go into prolonged isolation, a day after the measure was brought into effect for returnees from the UK, Denmark and South Africa over fears of a mutated strain of the coronavirus.
