This week, that senator has a name. As reported by Stars & Stripes, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn, is the lawmaker responsible for the stall. Blackburn argued Tuesday that she will delay confirmation until the agency indefinitely. That is, until VA provides its official position on the cost and implementation of the Comprehensive and Overdue Support for Troops of War Act of 2021. The confirmations impacted by the hold or stall include: Donald Remy: nominated to be the Deputy Secretary (top middle) Matthew Quinn: nominated to be under secretary for memorial affairs (bottom right) Maryanne Donaghy: nominated to lead VA’s whistleblower protection office (bottom middle) ....
Close Authorship Given the devastating economic toll the COVID-19 pandemic has had on women and girls, the imperative to mark International Women’s Day carries more weight than usual this year. The idea of a day celebrating the accomplishments of the female gender in the U.S. reaches back to 1909. Throughout the subsequent decade, the concept was embraced by countries including Austria, Denmark, Germany, Russia and Switzerland, but it wasn’t until 1975 that the first International Women’s Day was celebrated and adopted by the United Nations. As I began identifying leaders to include on this third annual list, I was inspired by the introduction to All We Can Save, an essay and poem collection co-edited by marine biologist Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (who you can find on this year’s list) and Katharine Wilkinson (who we recognized on the first Badass Women list in 2019). ....

Democrats are moving forward, however, and this week they began advancing their economic package using “budget reconciliation,” a parliamentary process that avoids a filibuster and requires only 51 votes in the U.S. Senate to pass a measure. (Budget reconciliation could nevertheless prove a lengthy ordeal requiring modification of the legislation.) Republicans are still hoping that they can have some input in the process, and 10 Republican senators met with President Joe Biden at the White House this week to discuss a compromise proposal that they had drafted. It appears that there is still a ways to go on this matter. ....
