Armed 79-year-old man dies after shot by officers during incident in Prince William County, police say
Authorities say an armed 79-year-old man who was shot by officers during an incident in Prince William County died from his injuries overnight.
DUMFRIES. Va. - Five Prince William County police officers who were involved in the deadly shooting of a man in Dumfries in December have been cleared. 
Commonwealth’s Attorney Amy Ashworth released a statement regarding the incident on Monday.
According to prosecutors, the police responded to the home on Secret Grove Court after a woman reported that her husband had a gun and he was suicidal. ....

Prince William Commonwealth's Attorney rules deadly police shooting justified


Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Amy Ashworth has found the police department’s use of deadly force in the Dec. 10 shooting of a 79-year-old Dumfries-area man as “both justified and reasonable.”
According to an investigation conducted by her office, the five officers involved faced “imminent bodily harm” as Kurtis Kay Frevert “raised his gun at the officers while walking towards them and saying, ‘shoot me.’”
The Prince William County Police Department on Monday morning released the names of the officers involved and a detailed timeline of what happened that night.
Officers were called to Secret Grove Court in the Four Seasons community off Va. 234 at 7:14 p.m. after Frevert’s wife reported her husband was suicidal, making concerning statements and armed with a handgun. ....

Prince William police conclude officer-involved shooting was justified


The police department released the findings of its criminal investigation on Monday.
The shooting happened Dec. 10, after officers were dispatched to the Four Seasons retirement community on Secret Grove Court in Dumfries, Virginia, around 7:15 p.m. A woman called 911 saying her husband was armed and suicidal.
Before police arrived, the man left the home on foot with a handgun and was believed to be in a nearby wooded area, according to investigators.
A police helicopter reported that the man was walking back to the home. Officers then found him on the front porch holding the gun. According to the investigation, police told him to drop the weapon, but within seconds, he pointed the gun toward the officers, five of whom shot the man multiple times. ....

Civilian oversight proposed for Prince William County police force


In the aftermath of a deadly police shooting in the Four Seasons community last week, a Prince William County supervisor wants to take advantage of police reform measures passed by the Virginia General Assembly this year to appoint a police civilian oversight committee.
The new law grants localities “clear authority” to establish civilian committees to investigate and issue findings on complaints against police, as well as officer use-of-force cases, Occoquan District Supervisor Kenny Boddye said in a news release.
The legislation was among many police reform bills finalized by state lawmakers last month, prompted by the May death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the protests that followed. The bills touch every aspect of the state’s criminal justice system, from traffic stops to prison sentences. ....
