Amidst the screaming guitars, pounding drums and hair flying headbanging, heavy metal music is providing a unifying outlet for indigenous communities across the United States, said California State University, Northridge history professor Natale Zappia.
Zappia said the power of heavy metal music with its aggressive sounds and distorted electric guitars is bridging generations and bringing together communities from disparate corners of Indian Country, particularly on Navajo reservations.
“It’s so loud, and the beat is so demanding. It’s hard to understand how it’s captured entire communities,” said Zappia, an associate professor in CSUN’s Department of History. “But when you get there, and you listen and talk to people, you realize that it’s a very cathartic activity. ....

Zonta of Santa Clarita Valley will be hosting a virtual business workshop, “You Have a Business Idea – Now What?”, Saturday, Feb. 27, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.

Join the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency (SCV Water) on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., to learn about and provide input on our Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP) Update.
This is the second virtual public workshop on the UWMP, which is one of the required plans our agency must complete as part of our long-term resource planning to ensure that adequate water supplies are available to meet existing and future needs.
Workshop participants will learn the outcomes of SB X7-7, the State’s water conservation law, and how our area performed in terms of water use efficiency. We will also touch on population projections for the Santa Clarita Valley, how much water we need to plan for that population, and our drought risk assessment. SCVNews.com | Tuesday COVID-19 Roundup: Two More Deaths at Henry Mayo; County Confirms Additional Variant Cases


The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed Tuesday 227 new deaths, including two additional deaths at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, and 3,353 new cases of COVID-19 countywide, with 24,901 total cases in the Santa Clarita Valley.
To date, Public Health identified 1,152,239 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 18,360 deaths. There are 4,079 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized and 29% of these people are in the ICU.
Of the 227 new deaths reported Tuesday, 66 people who passed away were over the age of 80, 95 people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79, 51 people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64, and four people who died were between the ages of 30 and 49. Eight deaths were reported by the city of Long Beach and three deaths were reported by the city of Pasadena. ....
