A second trip to Wembley of the season is off the agenda for Sunderland, despite a stirring first half display in front of nearly 10,000 home fans that rattled Lincoln City and had this play-off semi-final firmly in the balance.
It was always going to be tough for the Black Cats to keep up that sort of momentum for the 90 minutes and in the end the Imps did enough to stay alive in the battle for promotion. Sky Bet League One, though, will be played on Wearside again next season.

Lincoln City will travel to the Stadium of Light with a two-goal advantage after Sunderland fell to a 2-0 Sky Bet League One Play-Off semi-final defeat in Wednesday’s first leg.
Backed by the returning Sincil Bank faithful, Michael Appleton’s side started brightly in the Lincolnshire sunshine, but both sides were forced into early changes as Denver Hume and Adam Jackson limped off.
Anthony Scully went close during the opening exchanges and Brennan Johnson struck the woodwork, with Lynden Gooch arrowing an effort just wide to ensure it remained deadlocked at the break.
The Lads struck the crossbar twice within two minutes of the restart – Jordan Jones and Bailey Wright were denied – but they fell behind on 51 minutes, as Tom Hopper slammed home. ....
