Foreign ownership of firms like McVitie's is a threat to our food security


THE plight of the McVitie’s biscuit factory in Glasgow and of the workforce there who now face mass redundancies is a good illustration of the economic insecurity which comes with allowing overseas companies to own production capacity in Scotland.
In a recent series of articles in The National, the Scottish Banking & Finance Group (SBFG) have been making the case for reform of Scotland’s financial system so that it provides capital to support the production of the goods and services people need. The McVitie’s story is an example of what happens when capital is not available for domestic companies to develop their business. ....

Unionists rely on us lacking the knowledge to debunk economic arguments


IT is extremely encouraging to read the views from Dr Tim Rideout, Convener of the Scottish Currency Group, as he states in his letter (April 20) that policies of the state, not the banks, should be the target in Scotland’s future fiscal and monetary policies of an independent nation, and also then followed by the letter from Alex Thomson of Coldstream.
Independence for Scotland will mean a wonderful opportunity to update its currency obligations without being stifled by those of the UK, which has not the means or courage to deviate from its outdated currency policies that suit the conservative general attitude on running a country. Let’s not waste the opportunity. ....

Scottish independence: Currency should be just the first step after referendum


IN our first article, which was published in The National on March 26, the Scottish Banking & Finance Group (SBFG) proposed that Scotland will need to reform our financial system if we are to make a success out of our independence and that we will need to redesign both the banking system and reform the way our pension funds function.
The whole of our financial system must be designed to serve the people and be accountable to the people through a democratic constitution and elected Parliament.
In short, our money must be designed and used for the benefit of the people, and to support the creation of real wealth by producing the goods and services we all need individually and collectively to live well and in harmony with nature. ....
