It was not lost on many Americans including President-elect Joe Biden that after a violent mob of President Donald Trump s supporters broke into the Capitol in Washington, D.C., the delayed use of National Guard troops was far different than it was during the Black Lives Matter protests last year.
In late May, governors called on 43,000 troops nationwide. The nation hasn’t deployed National Guard troops at a comparable scale since the civil rights movement of the 1960s. By comparison, on Wednesday, acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller approved the deployment of less than 6,200 National Guard troops. ....

From testing for COVID-19, to treating patients with bedsores in staff-depleted nursing homes, to backing up police as riots escalated in the Twin Cities, it has been a record-setting year for the Minnesota National Guard.
Gov. Tim Walz has called on the guard for help at an unrelenting pace this year, including the largest domestic deployment in the guard’s history after the death of George Floyd last May.
And as 5 INVESTIGATES first reported on Wednesday night, the guard is now preparing for another potentially massive deployment early next year in anticipation of civil unrest during the trial of the four Minneapolis Police Officers charged in connection to Floyd’s death. ....

The Minnesota National Guard is preparing for a potentially massive and indefinite deployment early next year, during the high-profile trial of the four former Minneapolis police officers tied to the death of George Floyd, according to an internal plan obtained by 5 INVESTIGATES.
The 12-page warning order called Operation Safety Net outlines in great detail how the guard will respond to anticipated civil unrest before, during and after the trial of Derek Chauvin, J Alexander Keung, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao.
The worst-case scenario calls for all available guard forces in the state to be activated for an indefinite period of time. ....
