Harvard to Launch Ph.D. Program in Quantum Science and Engineering | News

Harvard will launch a Ph.D. program in Quantum Science and Engineering, which it said would be “one of the world’s first,” according to a Monday morning announcement. The new discipline, which will admit its first cohort of 35 to 40 graduate students in fall 2022, who work at the intersection of physics, chemistry, computer science, and electrical engineering. While Harvard already has a quantum science and engineering research community through the Harvard Quantum Initiative, the Ph.D. program will mark the first official venture into the emerging field. Faculty co-director Evelyn L. Hu, a professor of Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering, emphasized that the new program bolsters efficiency through classes designed to fuse science and engineering.

Sciences Dean Stubbs Says Federal Science Funding Could Increase, Denies 'Academic Espionage' at Harvard | News

Dean of Science Christopher W. Stubbs said in an interview that funding for scientific research has the potential to increase under the Biden administration. Stubbs also objected to the notion that there is “academic espionage” on Harvard’s campus. Though former President Donald Trump had proposed federal budgets that threatened to significantly cut federal funding for scientific research, sparking anxiety and anger among Harvard faculty and affiliates, Congress rejected those proposals. As a result, science funding generally increased during the Trump administration. According to Stubbs, there is potential for the increase in funding to continue under the new administration. “There are a number of proposals pending on Capitol Hill that would substantially increase the federal investment in the research and development enterprise,” Stubbs said. “We’ll see how they fare.”

Sciences Dean Stubbs Says He is 'Guardedly Optimistic' About Fall Semester Return to Campus | News

Dean of Science Christopher W. Stubbs said reactions to this fall’s campus reopening range from “enthusiastic” to “apprehensive” in the Sciences Division in an interview last week. As the University prepares for a “new normal” once affiliates widely receive the Covid-19 vaccine, Stubbs said transitioning back to in-person learning will be a significant task for the faculty. “Harvard is a big, complicated organization with lots and lots of people,” Stubbs said. “You can’t just hit a key on your keyboard, like ‘Harvard on, Harvard off.’” Stubbs said the return to a fully residential campus would likely be “complicated,” and described science faculty reactions to the reopening plan for next semester as “mixed.”

Sciences Dean Stubbs Applauds New Quantum Science Program, Additional Research Endeavors | News

Dean of Science Christopher W. Stubbs expressed his excitement for three areas of study within the Sciences Division — including the recently-approved Quantum Science and Engineering graduate program — in an interview last week. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences voted in favor of the creation of a Quantum Science and Engineering program at Harvard at last Tuesday’s faculty meeting. “We are at the forefront of trying to understand and exploit the really spooky elements of quantum mechanics in a way that may well have significant technological impact on society,” Stubbs said of the new program. School of Engineering and Applied Sciences professor Evelyn L. Hu, who advocated for the new program along with Physics professor John M. Doyle, told FAS faculty in the meeting that it is important Harvard adopt a graduate program in quantum science to contribute to the ever-growing field.
