Maria Carolina Izquiel wanted to leave Venezuela.
It was 2015, and widespread violence, hyperinflation, and poor healthcare had thrown the country into crisis.
Izquiel had built a career as a clinical psychologist. She ran her own private practice, worked at a community health center, and supervised a clinical psychology program at a local college.
But none of that mattered now. Not when the lives of her and her family were at stake. She had two young kids, a husband.
