Couldn’t Make It to Frieze New York? Here Are 10 of Our Favorite Artworks And though the fair is over, there’s plenty to be seen in the show’s online viewing room. By Anna Fixsen Courtesy of Casey Kelbaugh/Frieze. After more than a year without art fairs, Frieze New York is back. But this highly anticipated pandemic-era edition looked a little different. Rather than setting up shop in the usual sprawling tent on Randall’s Island, some 60 international galleries occupied the Shed, the multidisciplinary performing arts space in Hudson Yards on Manhattan’s West Side. Visitors, of course, were also subject to strict COVID-19 guidelines. Despite these tweaks, it was a pleasure to leave the house and see such an abundance of art and people outside of a museum. What at first glance appears to be a restricted precise rendering of bold black and white forms, on closer look reveals subtle surfaces on which the artist scrapes back the apparent perfection. The combination of gently ....
William Kentridge, Drawing from Waiting for Sibyl (Comrade Tree, I report to you), (2020) Courtesy: Goodman Gallery The success or failure of Frieze New York could have consequences throughout not only the art fair circuit in the US and abroad, but very likely for other cultural institutions that plan to hold events and are looking at the city s first major cultural gathering in more than a year as a barometer for post-vaccination attendance. Will it work? If the opening day of the fair is any indication, the answer is a flat out yes. Similar to the way elite athletes, pro-tennis players or boxers train in privacy for months prior to a tournament or championship bout, Frieze’s organisers spent months planning their relocation to the Shed. The announcement of the move to Manhattan from Randall’s Island was made in late October last year, but ....
