ed request from the state department inspector general who brief key congressional committees on a, quote, urgent matter relating to ukraine. the ig put in this request yesterday afternoon. this morning just hours before this briefing is set to take place, secretary of state mike pompeo publicly admitted he was on the call with president trump and the president of ukraine making is subject of this briefing all the more curious. let s go to cnn senior congressional correspondent manu raju on capitol hill for us. what do we know? reporter: the request for this urgent briefing came soon after mike pompeo sent a letter to capitol hill and said essentially that the state department would not be complying with what the democrats have been asking for, documents about the ukraine matter. there was a subpoena issued last week. pompeo pushed back rather aggressively on that as well as the democrats efforts to schedule depositions with current and former state department officials, people who
democratic and republican aides i ve talked to. to request a briefing like this in what is described by the inspector general as an urgent briefing for senior staff meeting in a classified room just off the senate floor to talk about exactly what the inspector general is indicating, that this has to do with something about ukraine, according to a very brief email that the inspector general sent to capitol hill yesterday. also saying that the inspector general obtained documents from the state department s legal adviser and those documents he planned to share with these aides later today. now, the question s exactly what the inspector general has already been investigating a number of matters internally. personnel practices at the state department. how does this tie into exactly what democrats are seeking? we know democrats issued that subpoena late last week to try to get documents turned over to capitol hill. also tried to schedule
