Masters entry Christine Berben won her K2 200m and 500m races while Carl Barnes took gold in the K1 1000m, and K4 200m. Troy Burbidge (Masters), and Ben McCallum and Fletcher Moles (U23) also finished strongly. McCallum, who trains at Lake Karapiro and was invited to join the national high performance squad, made the K1 200m A final with Fletcher. The postponement of the national flat water sprint kayaking champs in February forced the kayakers to reset training to focus on competing three months later in May, club president Paul Randall said. ....
East End emerged as the best-performed Taranaki club at the Eastern Regional Surf Sports contest held at Mt Maunganui from Friday to Sunday last weekend. Competing against much bigger clubs from the larger centres, East End finished in third with 70 competition points, a significant improvement on last season’s sixth place finish. Defending champions Mt Maunganui took out the title once again with a commanding 135 points, followed by Red Beach (Auckland) in second place with 91 points. Individual medal winners for East End were Claudia Kelly (gold in both the open women’s surf swim and ironperson), Josh Goble (gold in the under 19 men’s beach flags) and Tara Shotter (gold in both the U15 women’s surf swim and ironperson). ....
