There’s been a mixed response to ‘Say Maate’, Sadiq Khan’s new initiative to stop sexism in London by encouraging men to call out other men’s misogyny. The idea is that if a guy overhears a friend saying something sexist, he should interrupt him, intoning, in a disappointed tone, “Mate…” Addressing misogyny is complex. I get that. But Khan is at least trying. It is unacceptable that women and girls do not feel safe as a result of the behaviour of men – or the failure of government leaders. Time for a ‘Say Bud’ campaign here?
