In the last month, several new-age companies backed by venture capital, have or are set to hit the public markets. This has resulted in a gold rush for their investors. Travel tech platform Ixigo is set to go public next week, while insurtech firm Go Digit and coworking startup Awfis have already listed on the exchanges in the past one month. Their investors, including Peak XV Partners, Elevation Capital, ChrysCapital and TVS Capital and A91 Partners, are sitting on multiple returns from some of these investments.
Weather is a hot topic mainly because it is one of the few things on the planet that remains unpredictable, uncontrollable and prone to nasty surprises. Like the record high of 52.9 C recorded on Wednesday that catapulted an obscure village on Delhi s north-western edge into national fame: Mungeshpur. The weather department later clarified that a faulty sensor caused a wrong reading and it was actually nearer 49.1 C, but that did not cool our fevered phones.
Just before the start of the final phase of the general elections 2024 was to take place, there was a clear indication that it is bulls who are in control of the market. There are no two opinions, that a continuity in policy making will make the markets move upward very sharply. A glimpse of that will come in Monday’s trading session, when the impact of the exit poll result gets played out. So, with the base case assumption that the policy making will continue, we take things forward but continue with our principle stand that If one is taking fresh exposure to equity, ensure that there is some level of quality as far as the business and fundamentals are concerned. These selected stocks depict a strong upward trajectory in their overall average score which is based on five key pillars i.e. earnings, fundamentals, relative valuation, risk and price momentum. This implies that there has been a significant improvement in their market outlook in the given time frame.
In the last month of volatility, there are some sectors which have shown a streak of out performance. They haven t fallen as much as nifty and have been able to keep their head above the water even on the worst of days. The reason, their bottom lines are more correlated to what is happening in the country or the continent in which they have exposure both in terms of sales and in some cases in manufacturing. So, one way to take global exposure is to have a look at these companies, also it is a sort of diversification in terms of exposure to the underlying economy. Because they are operating at a global level, their balance sheets are good and in some cases, they have been able to enter amongst the top companies of the world in their sector.
Till a few weeks back, expectation of the street was very clear that policy continuity post 4th June. But then there was a bout of selling from foreign portfolio investors (FPI) and a narrative got created that they are selling due to polls. First logical question to counter this narrative would be to ask a counter question. Do they have some kind of insider information, the answer is surely no. Probably, just a few weeks back, after remaining in the dumps for years, the Chinese market came back into limelight, because of better than expected GDP numbers. So, there was a bit of movement of money. So, there is narrative and there is counter narrative. So rather than getting into a debate, there is a way to take care of both. The only thing is, a decision has to be made either today or Monday. Given the fact that there is a high level of noise on the street, more than anything else it is time to manage the risk of emotional decision making.
